Eight Lions starters missed practice today, including Matthew Stafford, DeAndre Levy, Jahvid Best, Calvin Johnson, Tony Scheffler, Corey Williams, and Cliff Avril.
Kevin Smith underwent surgery on this thumb that will put him out for the Dallas game. That means Jahvid Best and maybe Maurice Morris will handle the load for the Lions.
John Niyo also tweeted that Wide Receiver Kevin Curtis tried out for the Lions today:
WR Kevin Curtis would make sense for Lions, who need a #3. Back from cancer/knee rehab and working out. Played for Linehan in STL.
In my opinion, Curtis is one of the best options there are to take over as the third receiver. Bryant Johnson has been a disappointment with the Lions and Derrick Williams hasn’t been able to take the job from him (which should tell us how bad Williams really is). Curtis played for Linehan in St. Louis and has the speed to complement Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson in the slot. Last year, he had arthroscopic knee surgery and missed 12 games and was released on March 18th of this year. If he has fully recovered, then would easily be a great addition to the team.
In other news, the Lions lead the league in false starts, encroachments, drops, and are 2nd in penalties. Only one picture can truly put those words into perspective:
