Lions tales: Orlovsky is outplaying Stanton

Posted by: Zach

Killer Kowalski’s latest WDFN interview is up at Mlive. Cliff notes version, Calvin Johnson is impressing the Hell out of him and Dan Orlovsky is clearly outplaying Drew Stanton in the competition to backup Jon Kitna:

I’m not sure if I should be happy Orlovsky is finally stepping up, or be bitterly disappointed in Stanton, as I expect a player taken high in the 2nd round to be pushing for playing time. I still believe placing Stanton on the IR last August was a moronic decision that would set back Stanton’s progress immeasurably. Their indefensible decision to sit Stanton has come back to bite the Lions on the ass this season.

Let’s hope Orlovsky has figured things out, as it looks like Stanton is going to be too busy getting his NFL sea legs to be anything more than a clipboard holder in 2008. In Killer’s words, “He’s (Stanton) too far behind.”

“Too far behind?” Didn’t see that coming, huh?

When you see defenders the Lions passed over in the ‘07 draft, such as David Harris and Lamar Woodly, quickly becoming productive linebackers (still a Lion position of need), and then hear the reports of Stanton struggling…No, I’m not going there. It’s too depressing.

Speaking of 2nd round picks, Killer mentions DE Ikaika Alama-Francis during the interview, and says at this point of his career, he’s comparable to…Kalimba Edwards. Shit.

As for Calvin Johnson? I have one piece of advice for the Lions. I don’t care how you do it, just get CJ the damn ball! Enough of using him, and Roy Williams for that matter, as decoys. No way in Hell should Shawn McDonald or Mike Furrey be your leading receivers. Solid ballplayers they may be, they’re the number 3 and 4 wides for a reason.

Pooch kicks:

A kicker/punter, Eddie Johnson (No, I haven’t heard of this guy either) has been signed in order to keep the Lions’ long time special teams MVP’s, Jason Hanson and Nick Harris, fresh for the regular season. No word as to who will be cut to make room.

The Lions have announced they have cleared more practice dates where the the unwashed masses will be allowed to attend. Add Thursday, July 31, Monday, August 11 and Tuesday, August 12 to your calenders. Glad to see the Lions throwing their long suffering fans a practice bone.

Fire Millen has posted their take on Billy Junior meeting the press. They remain as cynical as yours truly. It’s just talk till we see improvement on the field. Their first suggestion for Billy? You guessed it – “Fire Millen!”
