Rumors of two free agents the Lions appear to be interested in have me shaking my head in a mixture of exasperation and disgust.
We all know the Lions have absolutely no depth at running back. Kevin Jones is is going into the last year of his contract, and recovering from his 2nd severe season ending injury in 2 seasons, a torn ACL. TJ Duckett ran well in place of Jones, but is a free agent, and exploring other options. Both Brian Calhoun (Still under contract) and Avieon Cason (A free agent) blow proverbial goats. So just whom are the Lions interested in signing to bolster their running back depth?
According to Mlive’s Killer Kowalski, they believe the possible solution to their running back woes is…
I’m not kidding.
Yes, the same running back the Lions obtained in the embarrassing Dre’ Bly trade. The same running back the coaching staff thought so little of, he never saw the field over the final 11 games of the season. The same running back who was left on the inactive list even though Jones was out for the season.
I’m a little confused. Bell wasn’t even good enough to be activated on game days in 2007, was behind the lousy Cason on the depth chart, yet they want to BRING HIM BACK IN 2008?!
That’s “Lions logic” for you, folks!
But that’s not all!
There’s another position (Of the many) we know that the Lions are desperate for help, that being linebacker. The current depth chart has Ernie Sims, then a whole lot of suck. Thus, the Lions are on the prowl for linebacker depth. That’s good, right? Not so fast, Skippy!
You’d think the Lions would be on the lookout for younger linebackers coming into their prime. It only makes sense. Thing is, we’re talking about finding players while using “Lions logic.”
So, who do the Lions think is a possible answer?
An old, injured, on the downside of his career linebacker well on the bad side of 30, former Dolphin Zach Thomas. Why would the Lions be interested in talking to a broken down 34 year old player with concussion issues, who’s not good enough to play for a team coming off of a 1-15 season?
It makes absolutely no sense, till you remember we’re using “Lions logic.”
Then showing interest in a decrepit player whose remaining career can be timed not in years, but in weeks, makes all the sense in the world. First the Lions meet with Al Wilson, now they want to talk to Zach Thomas. Who’s next on the Lions list, Dick Butkus?
